My daughter is 11 years old and has suffered with Ulcerative Colitis since she was five years old. I was advised that due to her disability I could claim disability allowance for her. In 2016 she was awarded the higher rate of care allowance. This suddenly stopped in May 2018.
When I contacted Disability and Carers Service I was told I had to renew her claim and as I hadn’t, the benefit stopped. They never sent me any renewal documents and when I queried this one operative said some people had not received them.
This was later denied at a follow-up phone call and I was told they could stop the benefit at any time. I was told to reapply and was turned down on the grounds of my daughter not needing at least one hours care per day. I appealed in November 18 and got a letter dated 30th December 18 saying they were looking at my claim, nothing happened until May 19 when I wrote to them asking for a decision, I got a reply a few days later turning her down again, I am now waiting for a tribunal.
Not only have we lost the disability allowance, my tax credits are also gone as well. My daughter’s condition is debilitating and causes her acute mental distress and the side effects of the drugs she takes to suppress her immune system leaves her open to all kinds of infections. The condition is also incurable.
