I am a carer for my husband. Absolutely everything is fraught with delays and stress.
He has been awarded PIP at the higher rate for both components but this took so much time and effort on my part. I spent hours and hours compiling evidence as if for a court case, as this is how we both felt, as if my husband was on trial.
Things such as ordering a more suitable wheelchair take months and months. His specialist chair took over a year to obtain.
The CCG is not much quicker. He gets some funding but the assessment is tough and designed to exclude all but the most severely disabled , due to cuts. We hadn’t even received the funding before he had to have a review. This is ridiculous and again, all down to cost rather than meeting the person’s needs.
Social Services have withdrawn some of his care package as the council have had funding reduced by 460 million over the past few years.
We are both sick of assessment after assessment to obtain basic services.
The home dental referral has also taken months.
Austerity is a deliberate, ideological attack on the most vulnerable. We both feel stressed and isolated.
I pity anyone new to the system as it is clearly on the verge of collapse.
